The 5y’s of perfect patient care

January 27, 2016/in News /by Steve Griffin

The 5 Y’s for perfect patient care.

On of the greatest common sense tools of Lean is the (5Y) analysis.  This tool simply ask’s Y (why)  5 times. The following is a result of me asking for the 5Y’s for perfect patient care .

  1. Why don’t hospitals strive for perfect patient care ?                                                                                                                                                      Answer: Clinicians don’t know how to analyze processes.
  2. Why don’t clinicians know how to analyze processes?                                                                                                                                                   Answer:  Clinicians are too reactionary and claim to be too busy.
  3. Why are clinicians  reactionary and claim to be too busy?                                                                                                                                           Answer: No planning and no standard work.
  4. Why don’t clinicians plan or have standard work?                                                                                                                                                           Answer :  Not important or significant to understand end to end                                                                                                                           process steps and reduction of variation.
  5. Why is it not important or significant for clinicians to understand end to end process steps and reduction of variation?                        Answer: No vision from leadership!
